Manufacturing Power Solutions

Manufacturing temporary power for critical operations

MEMS provides fully managed temporary power for manufacturing sites, production facilities and industrial operations across the UK.

We support planned shutdowns, maintenance, site upgrades, additional capacity, contingency arrangements and unexpected power failures. Equipment, logistics, installation, fuel management, live monitoring and 24/7 operational support are coordinated as one managed service.

Each temporary power solution is planned around your production-critical loads, electrical infrastructure, operating schedule and resilience requirements.

Temporary power planned around your production process

Manufacturing sites have complex and changing electrical loads. Production lines, compressors, pumps, process equipment, refrigeration, control systems and safety systems can have different operating requirements.

A site survey establishes what needs to remain operational and assesses load demand, voltage and phase, connections, equipment positions, cable routes, site access and operating period. Starting loads, changing demand, standby requirements, fuel, noise and emissions are considered where relevant.

This allows MEMS to plan the generator capacity, distribution, temporary high-voltage equipment and battery storage required for the project.

The result is temporary power planned around how your manufacturing site operates, rather than simply the size of generator required.

Discuss Your Requirement

Temporary power for planned shutdowns, maintenance and upgrades

Planned electrical work gives your team the opportunity to establish the temporary power requirement before the normal supply is interrupted.

MEMS supports manufacturing sites during electrical maintenance, switchgear and transformer work, infrastructure upgrades, production-line changes, site expansion and planned utility interruptions.

Early planning allows critical loads, connection points, equipment positions, cable routes, fuel requirements and installation windows to be established before the shutdown begins.

Where production needs to continue, the temporary arrangement is planned around the site’s operating schedule and the loads that need to remain available.

Our Generator Rental service supports planned requirements from individual generator installations through to larger multi-set temporary power packages.

Emergency power and manufacturing resilience

An unexpected loss of power can interrupt production, processes and critical site systems without providing time to prepare.

MEMS operates a fully staffed 24-hour control room to receive emergency requirements and coordinate the equipment, transport, engineers and fuel support required for the response.

The immediate priority is to establish which loads need temporary power, the available connection arrangements and the conditions on site. MEMS then coordinates the temporary power installation and ongoing operational support while the normal supply is unavailable.

Preparing before an outage reduces the number of decisions that need to be made during an incident. Our Disaster Recovery service helps establish site information, temporary power arrangements and response requirements in advance.

The UK Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan also identifies resilience and access to a resilient and affordable energy system as important to the sector. Read the Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan on GOV.UK.

Temporary high-voltage power for complex manufacturing requirements

Some manufacturing projects require more than a standard generator connection.

MEMS provides generator hire from 30 kVA to 2,000 kVA for single-set requirements, with multi-set temporary power packages exceeding 25 MW. Our HV Solutions include temporary high-voltage equipment from 1 kV to 33 kV for suitable project requirements.

The configuration depends on the site’s existing electrical infrastructure, voltage, load, connection arrangements and operating requirements.

For larger projects, MEMS plans the generators, temporary high-voltage equipment and distribution together to deliver power where it is needed across the site.

Reducing fuel use and emissions with hybrid temporary power

Following an emergency power requirement at a manufacturing site, MEMS used load data to identify an opportunity to combine a 200 kVA generator with a 45 kVA battery energy storage system. Over the measured final 31 days, the solution saved 2,542 litres of fuel and 6,813 kg CO₂e, a 43.17% reduction.

Lower-emission and hybrid temporary power

Manufacturing sites increasingly need to consider fuel consumption, emissions, noise and generator running hours alongside operational resilience.

MEMS Cleaner Options include Stage V generators, HVO fuel, battery energy storage and hybrid generator-battery systems.

Where the load profile is suitable, combining battery storage with power generation can reduce generator running hours, fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

All MEMS generators are HVO compatible, and HVO fuel is available as part of our managed fuel service.

The appropriate approach depends on the site’s load profile, duty cycle, operating period and technical requirements. Our Battery Energy Storage Systems can be incorporated where energy storage is suitable for the application.

Live monitoring, control room support and fuel management

Temporary power requires active management throughout the hire.

MEMS operates a fully staffed control room 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. MEMS Connect provides live monitoring of generator location, fuel level, load, performance and alerts.

Across the MEMS fleet, the platform processes approximately 403 million data points each day. Our control room uses this information to maintain operational visibility across active hires and identify changing fuel levels, performance issues and alerts requiring attention.

Our Fuel Management service coordinates fuel requirements around generator load, expected running hours, tank capacity, delivery access and project duration.

Manufacturing environments we support

Temporary power requirements vary between manufacturing environments. MEMS supports sites where planned work, additional capacity, electrical disruption or an unexpected outage creates a temporary power requirement.

These environments include automotive and component manufacturing, engineering and fabrication, food and beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, packaging, process plants and other industrial production facilities.

MEMS plans each temporary power arrangement around the electrical and operational requirements of the individual site rather than a standard package.

Manufacturing temporary power FAQs

Yes, where the site conditions and agreed installation plan allow it. MEMS plans equipment positions, delivery access, cable routes, connections and installation activity around the operational requirements of the site. The final arrangement depends on the electrical infrastructure, production environment and safe working requirements.

Planning starts before the normal supply is interrupted. MEMS establishes the loads that need to remain available, connection arrangements, equipment locations, installation window, fuel requirement and operating period. Our Generator Rental service supports planned temporary power requirements during shutdowns, maintenance and upgrades.

When a manufacturing site contacts MEMS following an unexpected loss of power, our 24/7 staffed control room coordinates the equipment, transport, engineers and fuel support needed for the response. We establish the priority loads, available connections and site conditions so the appropriate temporary power solution can be mobilised. Find out more about Emergency Generator Hire.
